LIVE WIRE – Sydney Live Music Guide November 1st

Jon Cleary: The English born musician had such an affinity for the sounds of New Orleans from his youth, that his first “short” visit to the city when he was 17 ended up with him moving there permanently. The man has been a powerhouse in New Orleans rhythm and blues, soul and funk for over 30 years, playing in rotating bands with greats like Taj Mahal, Dr John and Bonnie Rait and releasing five albums of his own; the latest of which being the well received Occapella.

Electric Empire: It might seem as though things have been quiet for the Melbourne group, however they’ve been busy traversing the globe, playing the  Glastonbury Festival, London’s Royal Albert Hall, Japan, France and even Kazakhstan. Somehow, they’ve managed to find time to record a follow up EP to their self titled 2010 album titled Changin’, which is a continuation and evolution of their 60s and 70s inspired funk and soul sound.

Diesel: One of Australia’s most enduring performers, Mark Lizotte has been wailing both on guitar and from behind the microphone since the early 1980s while he was still pumping fuel at a service station; hence the nickname Diesel. Since then he’s toured the world, recored 16 albums and is highly regarded by many stalwarts on the Australian rock scene. On this upcoming occasion Diesel will be revisiting music from one of the most influential artists in his life: Muddy Waters.

Victor Martinez/Rosie Henshaw: Classical guitarist and leader of the most accomplished musical family in Sydney, Victor Martinez, will be playing some of the avant garde music that has been captivating Sydney and global audiences for years. There will also be a performance by Sydney jazz-pop starlet Rosie Henshaw. Henshaw has been a regular around Sydney for years fronting 11 piece party band The Bakery and various dance projects though on this occasion she’ll be delving into her more intimate solo material.

Cabins: The young Sydney group combines elements of folk and indie rock with atmospheric sounds to create some very unique music and their live performance earned them a reputation around town for being a must see act. After taking time out to record the follow up to their debut, Bright Victory, the band returns to showcase the new stuff and have some fun on the road. They’ll be joined by the moody and meandering Winter People.
