Jazz from the 50s to the 70s provided a wealth of samples for the likes of Pete Rock, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and more to create a sound that has been one of the most prominent musical forces of the last 20 years. Dereb the Ambassador: Addis Ababa native, Dereb Desalegn was a bit of a musical celebrity back home, but he now brings his blend of traditional Ethiopian folk, Afro rhythms and funk to his adopted home in Sydney. Dereb’s stirring vocals are backed by a seven-piece band comprised of Sydney’s hottest young musicians, whose sound is hypnotic, energetic and will keep you up and dancing well into the night.

Antibalas: This Brooklyn collective from Daptone Records (the home of artists such as Sharon Jones & The Dapkings and Charles Bradley) are bringing their Afro-beat sound to Sydney. Antibalas, inspired by the Nigerian father of Afro-beat Fela Kuti, features members that contributed to the successful Broadway production Fela! and in the footsteps of the legendary musician perform music that is conscious, anti-war and focuses its energy on overcoming global injustices.
