LIVE WIRE – Sydney Live Music Guide June 9th

Thursday 9th sees the return of Joan As A Policewoman, otherwise known as Joan Wasser, where she brings her floating soulful folk to the Enmore Theatre in Newtown – amazing local lad Leroy Lee is in support. Anyone up for something a bit more ruffneck can catch new reggae legend Gyptian at the Manning Bar in the University of Sydney grounds off Broadway – sure to be good feelings flowing from either gig. Legendary ‘80s indie rockers The Falling Joys are back in the Sydney for the first time in 15 years, playing at Oxford Art Factory on Friday 10th with Momos and Gloomchasers in support; and just down the road at Spectrum, the truly inventive Sons of Rico are strutting their stuff as they tour their latest single.. That same night Super Furry Animals member Gruff Rhys plays solo at the Excelsior Hotel in Glebe – sure to be a solid  show from the eccentric singer. Tone in Surry Hills features all-girl indie pop trio Beaufields who are backed up by [ME], Aural Window and Mercury Sky amongst others. Still at tone, Saturday 11th promises to be an interesting night, with Japanese soloist drummer Tatsuya Toshida performing as Ruins-Alone with a host of mad-cap acts in support, including Darth Vegas and Captain Kickarse & The Awesomes to name a couple. Also on the 11th, the Metro Theatre in Sydney’s CBD hosts Aussie power-rock quartet Airborne as they knock over a quick Aussie tour before heading back to Europe and the U.S., where they apparently enjoy wider success. Waves Nightclub in Woolloongong features Aussie hip hop powerhouse Illy with special guests as he rides the acclaim of his The Chase record, promising a fine show for skip-hop fans. Sunday 12th has a special treat for jazz fans as legendary double bass player Ron Carter plays in the country for the first time ever, bring his trio to The Basement for an intimate performance – not to be missed! Sydney’s own The Paper Scissors are popping their heads up after some quite time for a national tour of their new album, In Loving Memory – they play Oxford Art Factory on Wednesday 15th. Thurs 16th and Judy Bailey’s Jazz Connection play the fabulous 505 in Surry Hills, where the food and boutique beer selection is worth a visit alone. Leaders of Sydney’s latin rock renaissance, Watussi, are playing the intimate Basement in Circular Quay for the first time in five years, where they launch their new single, Cuando Sera. Nativo Soul and Samba Frog are in support for an inevitable night of partying. Pop-rockers Red Riders are playing their final show at Oxford Art Factory on Saturday 18th as they say farewell before calling it a day – literally the last chance to catch these guys, unless they pull a Farnsey… Sun 19th sees the ever-impressive Tone in Surry Hills produce another one of its interesting nights: Eastern Aquarium II, with Time Shield, Electric Sea Spider and Slamagotchi making up a few of the exotic beatmakers lineup.
