Thurs 16th finds Judy Bailey’s Jazz Connection play the fabulous 505 in Surry Hills, where the food and boutique beer selection is worth a visit alone. The hilariously named Drunk Mums head the line up at the Gaelic Club that same night, with The Cadres, I Am Pollo and Bayonets For Legs filling the bill. Charismatic leaders of Sydney’s latin rock renaissance, Watussi, are playing the intimate Basement in Circular Quay for the first time in five years, where they launch their new single, Cuando Sera, before going on hiatus for the rest of Winter – Nativo Soul and Samba Frog join the 8 piece for an inevitable night of heated partying. Also on Saturday, Rooty Hill RSL with host Emma Donavon for the inaugural Women Out West, showcasing the talents of female indigenous singers in the Western Suburbs. Pop-rockers Red Riders are playing their final show at Oxford Art Factory on Saturday 18th as they say farewell before calling it a day – literally the last chance to catch these guys, unless they pull a Farnsey… Sun 19th sees the ever-impressive Tone in Surry Hills produce another one of its interesting nights: Eastern Aquarium II, with Time Shield, Electric Sea Spider and Slamagotchi making up a few of the exotic beatmakers lineup. Back at The Basement and iHearMusic.com are presenting the first of their The World monthly roots music nights, with Glenn Cardier, Sean Mackenzie and the fabulously soulful Merenia Gillies making up some quality entertainment for a Tuesday night. Wednesday 22nd sees the eccentric Afro Moses continue his June residency at The Mac on Wentworth Avenue, with his band, The Spirit of Moses Quartet, providing some fantastic African grooves at the cosy venue – free entry as usual. Sensitive guy Josh Pyke is back on the road, starting his Fans First tour with an intimate show at GoodGod Small Club on Thurday 23rd. After a year off, Pyke is giving his fans a chance to catch some new material in a small setting. Also on Thursday, despite seeming to be on the verge of closure, the legendary Annandale Hotel on Parramatta Road is still celebrating its 11th birthday, with Tim Rogers and the very talented Leena lending their services for the week of gigs. Rising stars Papa Vs Pretty do their bit for the pub the following night with Slackjaw, Speekeasy and Delerious in support, among others. On Friday 24th The Grates will be welcomed back to the country at Oxford Art Factory before heading up north to play their Splendour In The Grass spot, new album in tow. Their Sydney show is sure to be packed so get in quick! Those interested in the raunchier side of live entertainment can find it at the Enmore Theatre in Newtown on Saturday 26th, where the annual Miss Burlesque Australia pagent will take place – sure to be wild!
