LIVE WIRE – Sydney Live Music Guide June 14th
This Thursday 14th June, folk troubadour Jack Carty will be playing the Annandale Hotel to show off material from his debut album One Thousand Origami Birds. The album is a compilation of heartfelt songs with pretty acoustic guitar, piano, and string accompaniment as well as Carty’s irresistible singing voice. He’s supported by Achoo! Bless You, Annie McKinnon and Ross Henry. At the Oxford Art Factory, haunting electronic music producer Oliver Tank will be performing after recently touring the UK. The young Sydney producer has gained FBi and Triple J attention with his debut EP Dreams, which features pieces characterised by swelling synths, electronic beats and haunting vocals. The EP launch back in February was a sell out and this upcoming one is likely to do the same.
On Friday 15th June, Birthday Party collaborator and founding member of Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds Hugo Race will be performing a show with his band The True Spirit at Notes Live. After working with Nick Cave in the early 80s he formed seminal cult group The Wreckery before relocating to Europe. His return to Australia coincides with the No But It’s True album release with support from Leek and The War Wick Tragedy. In what also promises to be a massive night, Sydney rock & roll three-piece Bambino Koresh will be launching their debut album Up and Left at the Annandale Hotel. The group has produced a slab of fresh and catchy indie-rock numbers with nostalgic nods to Neil Young, Lemonheads and The Pixies. The fun won’t stop there though as the night will also feature performances by Charlie Horse, Wilding and a whole host of other acts. Over at 505, sassy cat-woman Edwina Blush will be launching an album of her own along with her backing jazz septet. Blush playfully purrs and meows her way through Sea For Cats as she sings lightheartedly about sunny beaches and sexual innuendoes, and a little bit more seriously about the environment and politics; all to the swinging sounds of jazz and bossa nova.
On Saturday 16th June, Kiwi reggae-soul kings The Black Seeds will be here to promote their latest and perhaps most accomplished album to date Dust and Dirt. On the new album, the band has embraced more sounds and genres than previously, and they’re still one of the finest live acts to come from across the Tasman. They’re supported by Cheap Fakes.
Finally on Wednesday 20th June, seasoned jazz, funk and soul singer Lily Dior will be launching her new album Let’s Talk About It at the Basement with a 15-piece band. It’s unclear how a band so large will fit onto the Basement stage, however we can safely say that her latest album is an incredible musical foray dripping with tasty funk grooves, wailing instrumental solos and of course – Lily’s smooth and soulful vocal performances.
