LIVE WIRE – Sydney Live Music Guide February 14th

The Necks: The legendary Sydney group have made a name for themselves as one of the best live bands in the world. Pretty good work for a band that doesn’t actually write songs. Without any pre-written riffs, grooves or progressions the trio completely improvise their sets, creating entirely original sprawling musical pieces in real time for the audiences. No two performances are ever the same making each show truly unique.

Jeff Martin, Ray Beadle & Terepai Richmond: The mind boggles at the mere sight of this lineup. The frontman of Canadian rockers The Tea Party, Australia’s most exciting electric blues performer and Australia’s premier drummer team up for a night of blues, jazz, soul and world music. Each one of these entertainers is a show stealer in their own right so it’ll be interesting to see what kind of manic musicianship will be on display at this show.

Thu, Feb 14th, Notes Live

Sketch The Rhyme: This rapidly growing night is the brainchild of inner west hip-hop label Big Village, who developed the idea of a show where local hip-hop vocalists, DJs and live acts would freestyle in tandem with local visual artists that battle for the audience’s approval. The show has been featured at various renowned festivals such as the Edinburgh Fringe, Woodford and the Sydney Comedy as well as becoming a popular local event featuring the likes of MCs Rapaport, P Smurf, Jeswon (Thundamentals) and live group True Vibe Nation.

Fri, Feb 15th, The Standard

Mike Tramp: Danish hardrock singer/songwriter Mike Tramp will be returning to Australia for the first time in six years to perform a solo show showcasing work he’s done with former bands White Lion and Freak of Nature through to his solo work and that with Rock ‘N’ Roll Circuz. The show is set to span over three hours as Tramp explores his back catalogue and regales audiences with stories of being an international hard rock and glam metal superstar during the 80s and 90s.

Sun, Feb 17th, The Vanguard

The Liberators: This local 10-piece outfit – comprised of members of Sydney groups such as Dojo Cuts, The Strides and The Bakery – is an upbeat homage to the Nigerian funk scene of the 1970s. By combining Afro-beat rhythms with the blazing horns of 70s American funk, the group produce a hypnotic wall of grooves that will defy any observer’s pretensions about hitting the dancefloor.
