The Laurels: Sydney’s favourite shoe-gazers have done a couple of laps of the country recently touring their debut album Plains. The album is bursting with colourful melanges of psychedelic effects and instrumentation; and their live performances aren’t just tight but they’re loud as hell!

Thu, Dec 20, Annandale Hotel

Big Village: To celebrate a big year that saw a slew of released albums as well as the release of another storming label compilation titled Big Things Volume Two, inner west hip-hop collective Big Village is throwing a Christmas block party featuring a host of bands from their roster. Expect some heavy local beats, rhymes and party vibes for one last time in 2012.

Sat, Dec 22, Good God Small Club

Tim Freedman: The frontman for the legendary Whitlams is doing a special run of shows around the country at a series of intimate venues. Freedman will be expanding on the repertoire he featured during his national tour earlier this year by including a couple of old favourites and offering the chance for folks to request songs on his Facebook page.

Wed, Dec 27, The Basement

Peats Ridge Festival: Technically not in Sydney but barely an hour north, PRF is spread over three days and across 20 areas with over 200 musical acts. The likes of John Butler Trio, Sharon Jones and the Dapkings and Luke Slater will keep you occupied as well as a host of local and international visual artists. The festival is also run sustainably, delivering fun in a planet friendly way.

Sat, Dec 29- Tues, Jan 1, Glenworth Valley

NYE Player Haters Ball: Sydney neo-soul group The Left Eyes featuring Milan will be delivering a night of R&B throwback performing a host of classic tunes from Destiny’s Child, TLC, the Neptunes, R Kelly and heaps more that you can get on down to. These nostalgic jams will be accompanied by DJ sets from Shantan Wantan Ichiban and Mike Who.

Mon, Dec 31, Good God Small Club

Regurgitator: The legendary Brisbane rockers are throwing a 80s glam rock NYE themed bash where they’re encouraging punters to channel their inner rock god and glam up for the event. Seven albums into a 20 year career and the ‘Gurge’ still consistently challenge preconceptions about what pop music should be. This is gonna be raucous.

Mon, Dec 31, Rock Lily

Unknown Mortal Orchestra: UMO’s self-titled debut record became a hit amongst critics when it was released in 2011. The record is a colourful journey through band leader Ruban Nielson’s mind tying together elements of indie and garage rock, adding splashes of psychedelic effects and topping it all off with quirky and unforgettable melodies. Their live shows are nothing short of amazing either.

Wed, Jan 2, The Standard
