LIVE WIRE – Sydney Live Music Guide April 7th

The absinthe-oriented Wormwood night is on at The Loft in Broadway’s UTS campus on Thursday 7th, with The Gooch Palms, The Scrapes and The Nugs leading a healthy line up of psychadelia, performance art and experimental music.  For something a little more straight-forward, Ben Ottewell of Gomez is bringing his solo show to The Basement in Circular Quay that same night, as he promotes his new solo album Shapes. Sydney locals The Jezabels are mid-meteroric rise at the moment, and their sold out show at The Metro on Friday 8th is testament to that. Those lucky enough to have scored tickets will enjoy a performance by this electrifying band as well as Ernest Ellis and We Say Bamboulee. Also on Friday, U.S. pop rockers Jimmy Eat World are back in the country, performing at the Enmore Theatre on Enmore Rd in Sydney’s Inner West, and Purple Sneakers LAST NIGHT is back at the Gaelic Club in Surry Hills, with Parades, Little Scout and Particles heading the line up. The Factory Theatre in Marrickville has Aussie hip hop legend The Herd on Saturday 9th, as the group celebrate ten years since their first release. With TZU’s Joelistics in support, this is a must see for any hip hop fans. Also on Saturday, The Vanguard in Newtown hosts local cabaret pop chanteuse Ava Torch as she and her band The Boybirds promise an innovative and rollicking show, and the annual Surry Hills Festival is back, with various day time sets by the likes of Jinja Safari, The Dirty Secrets, Jack Carty and Lanie Lane, to name a few. Sunday 10th finds the second run of the Bring It On! Festival at Fairfield Showground – a free entry, council-run event that promises a myriad of live bands and performances over the day. New Zealand native and star of Miami Horror’s I Look To You hit Kimbra is at the über-hip GoodGod Small Club on Wednesday 13th – sure to be an intimate gem amongst this month’s listings. Local reggae and afrobeat masters The Strides can be found at the Beach Rd Hotel on Thursday 14th for the new weekly dub/reggae night, Drop. The Strides continue the following night with a show at the magnificent 505 on Cleveland St, Surry Hills, where the hearty menu and boutique beers flow with the best local grooves. Friday 15th sees another Dust Tones night at Tone in Surry Hills, with Mista Savona Soundsystem and Vida Sunshyne leading a reliably top-class line-up of DJs at this top-class venue. East Side FM are presenting their free entry Global Rhythms on the Bay festival for the second time at Robertson Park in Watson’s Bay on Saturday 16th, with the exhilarating Dereb the Ambassador amongst the impressive world music line up that kicks off at noon. Also on Saturday, those interested have a chance to see what all the hype is about with Seekae playing at The Manning Bar at University of Sydney – definitely a group to keep your eye on.
