LIFE IN A DAY

LIFE IN A DAY

Life in a Day, directed by the Oscar acclaimed Kevin McDonald, is an eye-watering, breathtaking chunk of cinema pieced together from user generated YouTube content. Produced by Ridley Scott and shot over a single day, the feature length documentary showcases moments of misery, madness and astounding hilarity, such as when an elderly cancer patient chuckles to the audience about having his, “first poo in over a week”.  The documentary displays scenes of birth and death, and the most banal happenings captured in a remote village in Zambia translate as an enthralling representation of culture and character to audiences in Australia, and vis-à-vis. The film also raises questions both simplistic and profound by encouraging the viewer to imagine a life without possessions and the deeper meaning of existence in which an outlet to charge your iPhone may not exist. The reviewer’s sole criticism is that with over 4,500 hours worth of footage to pick and choose from, more editing would have gone a long way. (MC) ****
