The heritage-listed Fitzroy Gardens demolition threatens the viability of the site’s central fig tree which “may result in damage leading to adverse impacts” according to Sydney Council’s arborist’s report.

Three magnificent fig trees facing Ward Avenue will also be wood-chipped, and all garden bed foliage facing the Rex Apartments as well as flowers and ferns in 50% of the central hexagonal convict-brick garden beds will be pulped. Other hexagonal under-plantings are being “considered for transplanting off site”. Hmm.

Even if they survive three years of living on a construction site, the remaining shrubbery, Chinese Elm and fig trees will be lucky to survive this chainsaw massacre.

Turns out that Liberal Councillor Robert Belleli describes gay people as “undesirables” on at least one website, while also being opposed to gazetting Little Congwong beach in La Perouse as clothing-optional, a beach popular with nudists and the gay community (“Liberals nil-disclosures”, City News, October 14, 2010).

Why openly-gay Cr Shayne Mallard would ever want to bankroll Cr Belleli’s plug at Maquarie Street is beyond me?
