Inner-west cycleways

Have you ever tried to cycle to the city from the inner west using the cyclepaths designated by the local councils’ (Plan to put inner-city cycling on the map, The City News, Aug 2)

If you have, you know it appears as an ad hoc effort to keep cyclists off the main arterial roads, involving innumerable turns and street crossings. It is not a real cycle track.

It is for cyclists who are out for a jaunt on their bikes, who don’t have to be anywhere at a particular time but also don’t want to be at the mercy of a RTA bus or trucks and cars.

Bicycle commuters are forced back onto the main arterial roads as this is the only way they can get to work in an efficient manner that will compete with public transport.

Compare that to Melbourne which has designated cycle tracks taking commuters many kilometres without interferring with the regular commuter traffic.

I feel that this goes beyond just one council. If it is going to work then Sydney, Leichhardt, Ashfield and Marrickville will have to work together.

Candidate fatigue

Shayne Mallard is right: Clover Moore and Meredith Burgmann are fighting the battles of yesterday (Are you experienced’ Mayoral candidates brand Mallard an ‘ageist’, The City News, Aug 21).
At a candidates’ Q&A recently, Clover and Meredith looked exhausted, and towards the end they couldn’t even understand questions, and asked residents to repeat themselves – Clover apologised, claiming to be “so tired”.
Shayne on the other hand was spirited and energetic – with one resident even saying that he had never heard a councillor speak so well!
