Responsibilities extend beyond local areas

As a Marrickville resident, I was pleased to see that my council has shown leadership in the campaign to persuade the government of Israel to comply with international humanitarian law. I wonder if those who say that local councils should stick to local issues, will also protest when our council supports those affected by floods across Australia, or donates to the next international disaster as they did to the Red Cross appeal for Haiti?

However, I was disappointed to see the state and federal members of Parliament so unsupporting of our hardworking local councillors, who last year devoted many hours to work on local issues. I applaud them for also taking time to consider the plight of communities so much less lucky than our own.
