Letter to the editor: Thanks Council

Your front page artilce “Residents angry at lack of off-leash parks” seems to have been driven by some very selfish people.

We are a dog owning, dog loving family but my mother has a significant mobility problem and is prevented from taking exercise in some parks because of dogs running off-leash.  A very dear friend of hers was knocked over by a boisterous dog, broke her hip and did not recover from that injury.  My mother is understandably fearful that the same thing will happen to her.  Ms Mulligan may well ride around in a mobility scooter and, as such, is safe from dogs knocking her down.  I am sure she does not speak for a large number of disabled people or people with age related mobility problems.  Decisions to make some parks on leash is certainly NOT unconscionable.

Parks are for sharing.  Children, people who fear dogs, elderly people, people with mobility problems.  All must be considered and this is what Sydney Council did when they made some parks on-leash and some parks off-leash.  Thank you Sydney Council.
