Letter to the editor: Barangaroo disgrace

Tony Kelly says that the Barangaroo site will still be cleaned up by Lend Lease despite his one minute to midnight decision to remove the site from laws covering the remediation of polluted lands.

Lend lease claims that its past experience in remediation and regeneration makes it well placed to clean up the site over time.  This claim beggars belief given  its involvement with several other companies in the cleanup of Ground Zero after the September 11 attacks.

A Lend Lease subsidiary was among several companies cited in a $1.4 billion lawsuit filed by hundreds of fire-fighters, police officers and Ground Zero workers who claimed to be exposed to toxic chemicals on the site because they were not given adequate protection.

I wonder what the unions will think about allowing their members to commence work on the un-remediated site next week given the Minister’s decision and the poor track record of Lend Lease?
