Council Energy Policy

Your News Editor, Gareth Narunsky, correctly highlights City of Sydney Council’s quest to save energy (“Council works on its green credentials”, City News, June 10).

But is Council freezing over? As part of our Council Watch strategy I attended the upper echelons of their HQ Kent Street offices last week where Clover’s new energy-saving policies are biting.

Floors are on half lighting with 50% of fluorescent tubes removed, toilets are black holes with lighting only triggered by movement, and staff wore beanies and ski jackets because of reduced heating, I was told.

My tounge-in-cheek idea they implement a ‘Penguin Strategy’ and group-huddle for extra body thermal warmth met with “ice-cold” stares.
