Clover’s marina moratorium janus-faced: Sydney Harbour belongs to all
Jean Stuart, Pyrmont Community Group President, is right (“Locals hits back in response to wharf developers”, City News, March 24). Sydney Harbour should not be privatised. It does not belong to anyone: it belongs to everyone.
Clover Moore, in her role as MP, states she does not support such mega-marinas in Sydney Harbour.
On 12th May 2010 7:45pm at the Rex Centre, Kings Cross, she unquivocally opposed a marina extension for Elizabeth Bay stating: “I am absolutely opposed to increased commercialisation of the harbour, causing amenity, heritage and enviornmental impacts … Sydney Harbour belongs to everyone and all decisions affecting it should be subject to the public and democratic process with the broad public interest at the forefront!
“I have called upon the State Government to put a moratorium on all new marina developments in Sydney Harbour and to start public consultation for a Masterplan for the harbour, particularly given the reasons the State Government gave for taking marina assessment and consent powers from councils, which was that assets of such public importance as Sydney Harbour required a holistic, rather than piecemeal approach.”*
If her ultruism means anything she can have no doubt the Jones Bay marina is unviable, unacceptable and unsustainable and her moratorium should be raised in Sydney Council as well as State Parliament. After all, what’s the point of having a janus-faced Lord Mayor who also doubles as our state MP if they won’t fight on two fronts at once, or does MP just stand for More Pretence?
