Michael Gormly is right

Michael Gormly is right to highlight problems with a proposed extension of hours by Rouge Down Under nightclub, Kings Cross (City News, September 9).

In a week where media saturation has highlighted alcohol-fuelled violence problems in Kings Cross, it’s unsurprising council’s refusal may seem political as well as merit-based: at stake is the very validity of the Liquor Freeze Act.

The accuracy of council’s Police report remains even more vexed with claims and counter-claims now likely to be settled in court.

No wonder the applicant is disappointed.

Lord Mayor, Clover Moore, stated council’s unanimous decision was based on a ‘compelling and strong case’ although council refuses to release its legal report, a decision we’ve appealed to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

But Mr Gormly is not correct to claim I am an ‘anti-alcohol campaigner’. I am not Fred Nile who thinks drink is evil. How can it be if Jesus turned water into wine?

Let’s have responsible service of alcohol with pubs and clubs answerable to clearer planning rules which are in all the public’s interest in heritage zones.
