Leichhardt gets into Zumba fad

Leichhardt’s youngsters can try Zumba for free this month.

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of watching late night infomercials you’ll already know that Zumba is “the dance fitness workout gaining popularity across the globe.”

This August, Leichhardt Council is holding free Zumba classes every Tuesday afternoon for people 12 to 24.

Instructor Sonja Poturica, co-director of Zumba Australia, wants to bring to people a taste of modern Colombia by teaching students of all levels the moves for which Zumba is famous.

“If you’ve got sass and love a bit of salsa then it’s time to get hot,” Sonja says.

“The classes are warm and welcoming to people of all shapes and sizes. And you can shake down – without the strain and sacrifice.”

Zumba is far healthier and wholesome than other trends to have emerged from Columbia in the 90s – but according to its fans, just as addictive.

Zumba’s choreography incorporates hip-hop, samba, salsa, merengue, mambo, martial arts and some Bollywood and belly dance moves. Squats and lunges are also included.

The classes are an initiative of Leichhardt Youth Council, a group of young volunteers who want to connect young people in the area to each other,

while at the same time improving their mental and physical wellbeing.

Classes are Tuesdays in August at 5pm at Leichhardt Town Hall. Bookings: 9367 9216
