LATIN AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL

The 7th Annual Latin American Film festival showcases the diversity and vitality of Latin culture. The festival is a non profit series of events with all money raised supporting community projects. This year the films selected are dramatic, humorous and biographical. Each has a unique perspective which highlights social, political and cultural issues facing the region. MIA explores the struggle for acceptance of a transvestite living in an Argentine slum. The film is a moving portrayal of an issue that is rarely discussed. THE ZERO HOUR is a fast paced action thriller based upon a 24 hour medical strike in Caracas. Adding a twist to history, the story follows hit man Parca, as he takes over a local hospital and realises that he is alone in requiring access to medical care. THE SACRED SCIENCE is a biographical film about desperate people seeking alternatives to conventional medicine. Eight ill travellers journey to the Amazon jungle in search of a cure from local shamans. SILENCE IN PARADISE follows Ronald on his quest for love and work. This Columbian film, based on true events, exposes the ugly side of parts of the military. VIOLETA WENT TO HEAVEN is a Chilean documentary about folksinger Violeta Parra and won the World Cinema Dramatic Jury Prize at the Sundance film festival. The documentary features interviews with the national hero and showcases her amazing career.  JUAN OF THE DEAD is a hilarious take on the horror movie genre. Juan suddenly realises that the erratic behaviour occurring in Havana is not the work of dissidents and takes unusual action to solve the problem. It is billed as Cuba’s first zombie movie.
