LATCH KEY KID – ALL BECOMES ONE

LATCH KEY KID – ALL BECOMES ONE

The third album from Californian Latch Key Kid (aka Gavin Heaney) sounds like how you expect Californian singer-songwriter tunes to sound. It’s road-trip radio where the sun’s always shining and the music cruising from the stereo never really permeates your head-space. All Becomes One, much like Heaney’s other outputs, is perfect to have on while doing something else – which is possibly why the single Good Times was picked up by Packed To The Rafters and a US Coke ad. Heaney is a man of many talents (he sings, plays everything and produces), which has resulted in a lack of outside influence that on one hand shows musical aptitude, and on the other shows his weaknesses. Except for the track Falling Stars (easily the most notable of the bunch) the album never really departs from placid vocals, simple lyrics or delicate 4/4 strumming. There are some lovely mellow moments – and there’s no arguing that it’s listenable – but unlike touring buddies Jack Johnson or The Beautiful Girls, Heaney overdraws from the “mellow” account. This album could’ve stood on its own more if he’d shifted the gears a little.
