KNOWN/UNKNOWN

KNOWN/UNKNOWN

There are many things unknown. Where the universe finds its end, the strange appeal of Justin Bieber, where all your socks really do disappear to. And surprisingly few things are truly known in an age of innocent until proven guilty, where the tiniest shred of doubt is enough to topple an empire. It’s this shadowy nowhere land between the two that artists Alia Parker, Laura Pike, Anne-Louise Dadak, Kate Campbell, Skye Wagner and Lucy Hall are set to explore in the exhibition KNOWN/UNKNOWN at the Paper Mill Gallery. No attempt is made to cordon off a solution across the various mediums employed by the artists, but rather to canvass a landscape of query. Ahead of the Thursday 21st opening, the group point to the infamous 2002 statement by Former US Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld for you to ponder: “There are known knowns; there are things that we know that we know. There are known unknowns; that is to say, there are things that we now know we don’t know. But there are also unknown unknowns; there are things we do not know we don’t know.” One thing we do know? We will be going along to see what they came up with. (AB)
