Climate Action Newtown spokesperson Moria Williams has urged Australians to remain active on Climate Change despite the recent change in Federal Government leadership.

“We have a new PM to negotiate with” said Ms Williams “and we have to be stronger than ever. We need be demanding that Labor Governments have strong climate policy; at the moment they have no climate policy – their policy is to sign off on new coal fired power stations.”

Ms Williams was part of a delegation of representatives from different Climate Action groups that visited Canberra a fortnight ago – prior to the ousting of Kevin Rudd as Prime Minister – and took part in talks with the Government on the issue of climate change.

Ms Gillard’s coup has certainly swung the polls back in favor of the ALP, but it remains unclear whether the recommendations delivered at the meeting will hold any sway over her new policies as PM.

Ms. Williams was critical of Julia Gillards “community consensus” approach on climate change, accusing her of delaying action.

“It’s kind of frustrating” Ms. Williams told City News “During the 2007 election Rudd was arguably voted in on community consensus. The need for climate action was one of the key platforms … and yet here we have Gillard saying she needs consensus back, so that’s a little disappointing.

“More than ever its important that people are contacting their MPs and their new Prime Minister about climate change,” she said.

“People want strong action on climate change, its just matter of getting that message across to our leaders.”
