HOW DO YOU KNOW

HOW DO YOU KNOW

How Do You Know is a movie about Lisa (Reese Witherspoon) and the two guys she is choosing between – Matty (Owen Wilson) and George (Paul Rudd) – but doesn’t seem to know she is choosing between them. After being dumped from the USA softball team, Lisa starts a relationship with moronic womaniser, Matty. It’s quite obviously not a wise choice, but Lisa, flailing in a sea of failed motivational sports platitudes, settles. Enter George, a straight-laced but sensitive business man, who is probably about to go to prison for a bunch of stuff he didn’t do. George falls for Lisa after a poorly devised plot point/blind date, but Lisa doesn’t see him like that and instead they become friends. And so it goes … a prize for the first person to guess the ending. How Do You Know is not a terrible film. Sure, it’s messy and unconvincing story-wise but the cast turn in solid performances, with about half a dozen actual laugh-out-loud moments dotted throughout. Unfortunately for those moments, they don’t make How Do You Know a film worth seeing, unless your commitment to the romantic comedy genre is above average. (LH) **1/2
