‘Hear My Eyes: Memento’ Revisits A Nolan Classic With A Fresh Musical Twist For One Night Only

Moviegoers who enjoy watching old movies will have the opportunity to attend a screening of Christopher Nolan’s neo-classic Memento, with a fresh new live musical score presented by Hear My Eyes.

The opening weekend of this cinematic experience in Melbourne was part of the Melbourne International Film Festival and was attended by VIP guests and film enthusiasts. The response from audiences was overwhelming with a standing ovation.

Hear My Eyes presents film screenings with live music similar to seeing an orchestra perform a musical score to a film. It’s a similar concept but the difference is that they don’t work with orchestras but with contemporary musicians such as electronic artists, DJs, rappers or rock bands. So, audiences will be watching a film they know, and love presented in a fresh new way with new music performed live.

“This Memento cinematic experience is quite unique as it’s a percussive led score. It’s just one musician – Michael “Cavs” Cavanagh, the drummer of King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard – performing on two drum kits and electric drum pads, where he can perform ambient music and more electronic driven sounds,” explained Founder and Curator of Hear My Eyes, Haydn Green.

Past screenings include classics Terminator 2, Hellraiser and Chopper. These screenings are basically an art experiment and Haydn explained that there’s an element of surprise in these projects.

“There’s something quite magical about having music performed live while watching a film, the vibrations in the air of acoustic instruments paired with moving images is very special.”

Green clearly stipulates that he doesn’t believe this alternate musical score by Hear My Eyes is more effective than the original. They don’t aim to compete and that’s of no interest to him. He loves the original score by David Julyan which is a strong piece of art. He’s set that aside and wants audiences to enjoy watching the classic film with a complete alternate musical score.

“If audiences haven’t seen Memento and they come to this Hear My Eyes experience it will have a much more emotional impact because they’ll be sucked into the live performance and the film. But if audiences have seen the film previously it will be more of a cerebral experience because they’ll be comparing the two.”

When asked why he chose Christopher Nolan’s cult classic Memento for this new cinematic experience he was quick to respond.

“I love Memento and it doesn’t often get the praise that it deserves. It has an amazing script, clever writing and real knock out stellar performances by the actors as well.”

This Hear My Eyes project will be screened at the City Recital Hall which Green believes is the best sounding venue in Sydney for these experiences.

“It’s a 1000 capacity venue so the actual geography of the room is perfect for a 10-metre screen and there’s an incredible sound system to have these acoustic sounds resonating around the room.”

This Memento cinematic experience is a one night only event and should not be missed. It’s perfect entertainment for cinephiles and music enthusiasts.

“I think it will feel familiar even though it’s completely new with the alternate musical score and should be a rewarding night out for audiences who love Christopher Nolan and Indie cinema,” concluded Green.
