A fantastical childhood fairytale mixed with blood, guts and bad-ass action, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters is every bit adventurous as it is confusing.
The addition of evil witches, brutal fight scenes and machine guns makes it highly detached from its humble beginnings. The film draws an incredulous smile on your face as you try and follow the curses and nudity that seem so foreign in such an innocent setting.
With a commendable casting choice; the ever-brooding Jeremy Renner as Hansel and rising British star Gemma Arterton as Gretel; and produced by comic legend Will Ferrell, the film has the thrilling familiarity of a fairytale teamed with a wicked sense of humour. (CD) ***1/2
