If Guy Clark is a name you keep coming across, dropped by song-writers and critically acclaimed by music writers, then now is the time to do something about it. Somedays the Song Writes You is Clark’s 11th studio album, and as good as anything he has penned in a long and salubrious career. Friend to the brilliant Townes Van Zandt, and mentor to the likes of Steve Earle, Clark is the consummate craftsman when it comes to songwriting, his simple tales waste not a word, and run from his whiskey-stained tongue as if they were ages old. The Guitar – a tale of musician, porn-shop and battered guitar complete with some superb fret-work – is an instant classic in the vein of his old friend Van Zandt, while the title track rolls along and rolls you along with it, a perfect introduction to an album and artist. They don’t always need to be bigger in Taxas to be better; Guy Clark is one of the best and continues to be so. Somedays you write the reviews, somedays the reviews write you.
