The City of Sydney Council looks set to give the NSW Government an extra $40 million for the transformation of George St into a precinct for pedestrians and light rail, after a request from NSW Minister for Transport Gladys Berejiklian.

Ms Berejiklian met with City of Sydney councillors on Monday, asking the City to increase its spend towards the George St modifications from $180 million to $220 million.

Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore responded positively to Ms Berejiklian’s request, meaning the City will likely commit to the extra funds, which would go towards constructing laneways, public art, lighting, tree planting, signage and other improvements.

“After speaking with the CEO about implications for the City’s budget, I have let the Minister know that I support her request for the extra funding,” said the Lord Mayor.

“The final decision, however, will need to be made by all councillors at our next Council meeting.”

The State Government’s $1.6 billion light rail project will see George St permanently closed to cars between Bathurst and Hunter Streets, in tandem with the rollout of trams.

The Lord Mayor said she hoped the works would transform George St into one of the nation’s most important economic and social hubs.

“Light rail is not just a transport solution. With a large area of the street pedestrianised as part of this project, we can expect that George St will become a prime driver of the Australian economy – the country’s most appealing destination to work, shop, study, holiday and even party.”
