In a bid to reduce the city’s major congestion problems, the government announced it will be building an underground tourist and charter coach layover facility in Sydney’s CBD.
This will free up road and parking space and provide safe and secure facilities for drivers, according to Transport Minister David Campbell.
“The new 55 space layover will be used by tourist and charter coach drivers waiting between pick up and set downs or for drivers taking a meal or rest break,” Mr Campbell said.
“A 2009 audit of CBD coach parking indicated there were few long term coach parking spaces for coaches in the Sydney CBD.
“It found this sometimes led to coaches parking illegally on city streets or circling the CBD, causing traffic congestion.
“Following the audit, the NSW Government oversaw the construction of this long-stay coach facility at Darling Harbour, near King Street Wharf.”
The facility is estimated to be worth about $25 million and was funded and constructed by a private sector company who also built an office block on the site.
