Good News For The Inner City

This week, in response to reader demand and repeated requests from advertisers, we are increasing the frequency of the City Hub, the Bondi View and the Inner West Independent. Along with the City News, inner city readers will have more chances than ever before to find one of our fiercely independent, inner city newspapers.

The Alternative Media Group of Australia publishes four independent community newspapers in the most monopolistic media market in the western world. While News Limited and Fairfax have brutally cut everything but their newspaper advertising rates; as jobs, circulation and page counts dwindle, we believe that local newspapers still serve an important role in a democratic society. Not only do they generate local news stories in a world wide web of information overload, community newspapers continue to offer some of the most cost effective ways to reach local consumers: right here, right now.

When the first edition of the City Hub hit the streets of Sydney in August 1995, we stated it was our mission “to print the news and raise hell.” Seventeen years later, the City Hub will resume its original weekly publishing schedule. Now every Thursday, inner city readers will be able to find their favourite alternative newsweekly at outlets between Bondi and Balmain. The City Hub will join its sister publication, the City News as a weekly newspaper. Launched twelve years ago in July 2000, the City News is the oldest community newspaper in City of Sydney local council area.

And there’s even more good news for news-starved inner city readers. Eastern suburbs’ residents, who have loyally followed the Bondi View since it started as a monthly publication in June 2001, will have twice as many chances to pick up their favourite independent community newspaper. To celebrate the Bondi View’s eleventh birthday, we are doubling the paper’s frequency to fortnightly. Not to be outdone, the three year old Inner West Independent will also expand its frequency from monthly to every other week, doubling our independent community news coverage in the inner west.

While other newspaper companies are shutting down newspaper titles in Australia, we are giving consumers what they want: good old fashioned local news. For years inner city readers have depended upon and discussed our four independent community newspapers: the Sydney City News, the City Hub, the Bondi View and the Inner West Independent. More than a half million people live in Inner Sydney and half of the urban population is between the ages of 20 and 44, making the region the largest concentration of young people in the whole of Australia.

Inner Sydney residents are in their prime consuming years. They spend more and they have more free time to spend. Each month, the Alternative Media Group of Australia publishes four independent publications exclusively targeting the inner city’s trendiest precincts: the Sydney City News, the City Hub, the Bondi View and the Inner West Independent.
