Glebe’s Toxteth Hotel targeted, again

A community fundraiser at The Toxteth Hotel on Glebe Point Road was raided by council rangers last week, just one month after the hotel was forced to cancel its weekly trivia night because of licensing issues. Among the guests at the Talking Heads fundraiser was ALP mayoral candidate Meredith Burgmann, who chaired the meeting, which aimed to raise funds for East Timor.

Event organiser Kate Barton told The City News: ‘Half way through the meeting the venue was raided by City of Sydney council rangers due to a noise complaint. Attendees found this a tad strange, as those up the back of the room ‘ were having problems hearing the speakers.’

City councillor Marcelle Hoff said the rangers received two complaints. ‘They were obliged to check all public areas in the hotel ‘ which they did,’ Cr Hoff said.

Despite the raid, both complaints were deemed to be unfounded and the meeting was allowed to proceed.

Last month, the Toxteth Hotel was forced to abandon its weekly trivia night after a similar complaint. It was later revealed the hotel did not have an entertainment licence.

The Toxteth’s venue manager told The City News the hotel did not follow through with its licence application after council imposed a number of conditions, including restrictions on where alcohol could be served.
