Glebe fair takes it to the streets

The banners are being painted and the stalls are almost set in preparation for the 28th edition of the Glebe Street Fair.

Starting at 10am this Sunday the fair is the latest instalment in the longest running fair of its kind in Sydney and is expected to attract more than 100,000 people to enjoy the entertainment and more than 200 stalls.

Glebe Street Fair Coordinator, Juliet Scrine said the fair aims to engage parts of the community that might not otherwise get a chance to interact and to showcase the diversity and colour of Glebe.

“There is a feel about Glebe that makes it really unique,” she said.

“Each year we try to bring a different feel to the fair to provide families with a fun and entertaining day out.”

This year’s theme is “umbrellas” to reflect the way the fair provides an umbrella event for the community.

Umbrellas will be lining the John Street Stage, Parramatta Street Stage and the streets of Glebe, which will be closed for the festival until 10pm, in preparation for the event.

“We will be showcasing an amazing array of food, crafts and unique products from all over Australia,” Ms Scrine said.

“The roads are closed and people will be dancing in the streets, it’s going to be amazing.

“There will be over 200 stalls featuring gourmet food from around the world including Spanish, Jamaican, Italian, Chinese, Indian, and South American as well as delicious Christmas Puddings and Xmas goodies.”

Performances at this year’s fair include The Creatures Rose, Lost in the woods and Miriam Lieberman plus performances from Latin and Spanish dancers.

Singer Penny Hartgerink from Penny and the Mystics said she was looking forwards to engaging with the Glebe community.

“It’s our first time at the festival and we’re really excited about it,” she said.

“We also have the release of our debut album so I’m hoping people like our sound and have a lot of fun.”

The local youth group and schools will also be involved, with a scheduled touch football event scheduled in the auditorium.

Ms Scrine said a festival favourite for her is Foley Park, with a selection of umbrellas and parasols for children and adults to paint and take away with them.
