GIG: THE BASICS

GIG: THE BASICS

The Basics are a trio from Melbourne with a penchant for polish- from cotton-wool blend suits to smooth retro sounds that rock; they are the kind of boys your mother would love.

The affable group are Kris Schroeder (bass/vocals), Tim Heath (lead guitar/vocals) and Gotye’s ARIA Award-winning, Wally de Backer (drums/vocals). Acoustic instrumentation and layers of samples, trinkets and percussion propelled their previous tour. As de Backer says, “We had a jolly good laugh with everyone and then went home.”

Their upcoming show at the Opera House Studio will feature sweet melodies, trademark humour, soaring harmonies, guitar blues-rock and delectable visual displays, plus support from indie-pop quartet, The Boat People.

As de Backer cheekily adds: “The shells (Opera House sails) looked very nice on the flight in from Melbourne one time so we thought we’d bring a little culture to the place.”

The set will feature songs from the forthcoming album, Keep Your Friends Close – recorded in Northcote, Victoria, with Andrew ‘Idge’ Hehir and slated for mixing at London’s famed Abbey Road studios. De Backer says we can expect “Full-tilt, XXXX, no-proof Aussie pub rock. Wine and nibblies available in the foyer.”

July 17. The Studio, Sydney Opera House. $30-35, 9250 7777 or sydneyoperahouse.com
