GIG: FRIGID RETURNS

GIG: FRIGID RETURNS

It was almost Stiff. Or Rigid. Thankfully it ended up being Frigid – a wordplay on its unique brand of chill-out, some degrees cooler than that offered on Sydney’s sexed-up club scene. “It was certainly not like a normal club night … as in ‘dark loud room, flashing lights’ etc.,” agrees co-creator and musician, Luke Snarl. “It was more a place to socialise while interesting music happened.” Music that ran the gamut from homespun hip hop (Elefant Traks) to glitch all the way to ‘uncategorisable’ Braindance beats (cult label Rephlex).  Luke attributes at least some of Frigid’s success – it was one of Sydney’s longest running musical nights – to this prismatic diversity. Each experience was like a lucky dip – but you were assured aural stimulation and musical experimentation. Ongoing magazine mainstay Cyclic Defrost provided the on-paper report from these badlands. When Frigid hung up its gloves in 2006, many young eyes were moistened. This heralds a welcome return. But don’t go blocking out your Sunday nights for the rest of the year. “We are back for one night only! … We are all too old and too busy now. The only thing with powerful enough voodoo to bring us staggering from the crypt is 2SER’s 30th Birthday.” He promises a night on par with one of Frigid’s finest (and biggest), but “Probably without the lasers – they are so mid-2000s.” Wouldn’t want something uncool at a Frigid.
