FOOLS ISLAND

A meteor lands on earth carrying two brothers: one good and one ‘not so good’. We have arrived on Fool’s Island. From the first moment the audience is captivated by Bell Shakespeare actor Darren Gilshenan’s solo performance. The play examines the creative and destructive forces of human nature beginning with a man learning to move and use his body, to speak, dance, love (a palm tree) and ultimately to kill.

The use of Shakespearean language does not make this play inaccessible. Gilshenan’s physical, slapstick, clownish style allows language to play a secondary role and provides an excellent introduction to Shakespeare.

Some scenes, particularly towards the end, are dark and sexually violent and not suitable for children under the age of 10. However, this does not detract from the fact that this play has broad appeal, with many laugh aloud moments.
