FOLKRAISER

FOLKRAISER

It’s not such a novel idea – slap together some music, booze and karma-hungry humans in order to raise some cash. But when newly-formed folk band Packwood decided to do just that to fund their new EP, what is unusual is that a bunch of other local folk outfits such as The Maple Trail, Amanda King, Arbori and more – no doubt as impoverished as the next – happily threw in with them. This is clearly one musical scene that lives up to its peace-loving reputation. Bayden from Packwood tells us more.

How did the idea for Folkraiser come about? The idea was to not only raise a little bit of dosh for the Packwood EP coming out next year, but also to provide a platform for some of Sydney’s exciting new folk bands. I use the term ‘folk band’ quite loosely mind you, the acts range from the traditional singer-songwriter, to neo-folk/electronic crossovers using loop pedals to create soundscapes, to Packwood. We’re even considering making Folkraiser an ongoing event for the future, whether it be just a community of musicians all raising money for our respective projects, or for other things we’re passionate about.

Folk must be a pretty friendly scene – for other bands to muck in for YOUR debut EP! What did you do to convince everyone? It really, really is! Considering I’ve only been playing for about two months now, and how few of us ‘folksters’ there are that are up and active… the response I’ve had so far has exceeded my expectations. The first thing I did was make the poster. Visualising the end result is what always does it for me. Then I asked! Simple as that. There is a lot to be said for the kindess of musicians!

Tell us more about the activities you have planned for Folkraiser? We’ll have a pop-up ‘photo booth’ to dress up in and take some happy snaps, an absolute plethora of delicious baked treats, some drinks on offer (it’s BYO, also), an incredible old wind-up 78′ record player for intermissions and, of course – the eight bands themselves!

One song you are most looking forward to on the night?
Up-and-comer Patrick James’ cover of Wayward Son is just killer. I’ve always had a soft spot for that song. I keep finding myself humming Faith Lee’s Life Long Friend, too. So many good songs!
