Make sure to stay cool today as Sydney gears up for one of the hottest days of summer today (December 27), with temperatures reaching up to 38 degrees throughout the city suburbs.

The Bureau of Meteorology has advised residents of New South Wales to expect intense weather today, with Sydney forecasted as the hottest capital city in the country today.

As a result, the NSW Rural Fire Service has announced a total fire ban for Greater Sydney, as well as the Greater Hunter, Northern Slopes and North Western areas of the state. The risk of fire has been described as Extreme and High through much of NSW.

The heatwave follows a string of extremely hot days down south in Melbourne, which was seen a number of bushfires break out that forced residents to evacuate. With 5 years since 2019’s Black Summer bushfire period on the minds of many, we can only hope that no fires break out in these prime conditions.

Beating the heat on one of Sydney’s hottest days

Maybe your air-conditioning has been underwhelming lately, or perhaps you’d still like to get out in this weather: regardless, here’s a couple of ways to beat the heat for a low-price:

  1. Drink plenty of water, of course.
  2. If you have thin towels or Chux, dampen them with water and put them in the freezer for a while. With the right positioning, you can make it arch and rest it on your shoulders and neck for an (almost too) effective heat-beater.
  3. Public pools are open today throughout the city, but certainly don’t expect you’ll be the only person taking a dip today.
  4. Not many libraries are open until the New Year, but the State Library of NSW is a great place to kick out indoors with the air-conditioning running. Plus, what better place to read that new book you got for Christmas?
