Festival for the pre-loved: Garage Sale Trail returns this Spring

Go out find some great deals on pre-loved items during the Garage Sale Trail, this November in the Waverley LGA. The weekend festival encourages people to sell, buy and support the local economy, whilst helping keep pre-loved goods out of landfill.

The non-for-profit community enterprise was created by Darryl Nichols and Andrew Valder in Bondi 13 years ago, aiming to help educate Australians on the importance of reuse through connecting and strengthening local communities. With their tagline, “Don’t dump It. Sell it,” the festival has since spread interstate and across communities.

Waverley Council has since supported the program within the council area, apart of the council’s ‘Make-do & mend’ reuse options. Waverley Mayor, Paula Masselos, described the programs success within the LGA.

“Last year over 300 garage sales and stalls were hosted across Waverley. Around 5,600 of our residents participated as a shopper or seller resulting in 113,410kgs of items being sold and reused,” said Masselos.

“In addition to this, the average seller made around $1,300 from hosting a garage sale in Waverley. We hope to have an even bigger impact this year,” she continued.

“Garage Sale Trail… helps neighbours connect, make some money, and keep quality items and furniture out of landfill.”

This years trail will be spread across two weekends, November 11-12 and 18-19. The program is calling for both sellers and buyers to register early for the event.

Online discussions will be held the weekend before, 28-29 October, with a cast of experts helping provide tips on sustainability, circular economies, and styling. These discussion will be free to attend and hosted online.
