Festival drums to a local beat

Festival drums to a local beat

Get ready to enjoy another year of colour, music, fun,
games and culture at the 31st Ultimo and Pyrmont
UPTown Festival, presented by the Uniting Care Harris
Community Centre.

The annual event is on March 24 and will feature
more than 20 live acts.

These include the flamenco of Los Carmonas, Team
Beat African drums, Zumba, demonstrations of martial
arts, Tai Chi, choirs, some local rock bands and much
more.

More than 5,000 people are expected to visit this
year. Children can amuse themselves at the animal
farm, jumping castle, face-painting and watch
Jonathan the Clown.

Local businesses will also be there to promote
wares, from books to beads, bags and bric-a-brac.

Spokesperson for the Pyrmont Action Group,
Elizabeth Elenius said one of the Group’s objectives is
to inform people of relevant local issues.

The proposed development of a public recreational area
on Bank St is one such issue.

Modern Italian cuisine, Turkish gozleme, a sausage
sizzle and other dishes provided by “Sydney Catering
Concepts” are just some of the culinary delights on
offer.

One new Festival participant is “Eat, Drink, Give”,
an enterprise that attends events in order to raise
money so that similar dining experiences can be
given to people who don’t have the same privileges
that many of us enjoy – including the elderly,
disadvantaged and the disabled.

In an effort to publicise the event, the fi rst 100
people who “like” their Facebook page or “follow”
them on Twitter will receive a free steamed pork
belly bun.

Attendees are encouraged to wear traditional
clothing from their country of origin.

There will be prizes for the best dressed festivalgoer.
In the case of rain, the Festival will be held at the
Ultimo Community Centre.
