END OF WATCH

Two young ‘hero’ officers get caught in the cross-hairs of a dangerous drug cartel while working in South Central L.A. The film is a gritty look at the thin blue line from the perspective of the young and cocky. Officer Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) is filming his duties for a course and the use of handy-cam style shooting helps build the tension in key places. However, the premise becomes flimsy when there is no explanation for why everyone else seems like they are using one. The relationship between Taylor and his partner, Officer Zavala (Michael Peña), is a touching look at brotherhood and friendship but what lets the film down is the overuse of swearing and screaming to portray the ‘bad guys’ … it gets boring.
