The bastion of regional Australian cuisine has finally landed in the big smoke. Newtown’s the home of Sydney’s first inner city store, but until there are more, the delivery area is quite extensive. They’re taking on the cheesy, fast food pizza set, and in comparison to the inedible swill we received after regressing to Pizza Hut recently, they get my vote. Franchise owner Brian Meknas (formerly Pizza Haven) is well placed for comparisons; “the dough is a lot lighter”, and “unlike Domino’s and Pizza Hut they don’t use flavoured meats.” I shudder to think. The proof however is always in the pudding, and even the Apple Crumble Dessert ‘Thingie’ ($4.95) is good. It’s warm and satisfyingly full of spiced apple. Commence with a Garlic Four-Slice Pizza ($4.95) then order the Chicken Club ($13.95) topped with shaved parmesan, fresh parsley and a garlic aioli swirl. Surf and turf, a perennial regional favourite, is generous for the price in the Steak and Prawn ($13.95) pizza. This arrival won’t make gourmet pizza-makers tremble, but I’d crown ‘em king of the rest for sure! Brian’s catering is competitive too; he already counts “all the clubs and societies at Sydney Uni” as clients. They call him ‘The Pizza Man’.
