Dr Sketchy’s Anti Art School is a life drawing class that features Burlesque starlets, vaudevillians, circus performers, magicians, hula hoop artists, live music and competitions like ‘best five-minute left-hand drawing’ or ‘best incorporation of a woodland animal’. Artists Molly Crabapple and A.V Phibes started Dr Sketchy’s in 2005 in Brooklyn, and it’s since spread to many corners of the globe, recently landing at the Arthouse Hotel in Sydney. On every second Tuesday different models and performers are there, ready to be captured in people’s sketch pads. ‘As opposed to a very quiet art life drawing class, this incorporates entertainment too and people are coming to draw a character,’ says organiser Jac Bowie, ‘the girls and guys will be in very elaborate costumes and will bring props with them.’ The next Dr Sketchy’s (March 25) will feature Queen Mima performing and Melanie Cicchini modelling. Food and drink are available, bookings are recommended, bring your own paper and drawing supplies, and don’t be shy.
