Deputy Premier Prue Car Returns To Work Following Breast Cancer Battle
NSW Deputy Premier Prue Car has announced her return to work in state parliament on Monday after taking personal leave following her breast cancer diagnosis.
The Education and Early Learning Minister announced in June that she would be taking personal leave after her second cancer diagnosis, three years after fighting a seperate kidney cancer diagnosis.
In a statement, Car thanked all those that had supported her through the last seven months, including her family, colleagues, and team at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse.
“I have been incredibly lucky to receive an amazing amount of love and support – from my husband Brad and our children, from my colleagues and from the community I am proud to represent,” she said.
“Thank you to NSW Premier Chris Minns. Just as he has supported so many across NSW in tough times, he has supported me and my family every step of the way through this difficult period.”
Over her seven month absence, Car’s education and early learning portfolio was absorbed by Courtney Houssos, who was also thanked for her work and support.
“The experience of overcoming breast cancer has certainly changed me,” Car said. “What hasn’t changed is my unwavering commitment to deliver for the people of New South Wales, for the beautiful community I represent in Western Sydney, as well as continuing our nation-leading reform program in education across New South Wales.
“I can’t wait to get back to work for the people of NSW. To my family and friends. To my colleagues. To the wonderful doctors and nurses. Thank you so much.”
Premier Chris Minns acknowledged his deputy’s return in his own statement on Sunday, saying the state of NSW was “so lucky to have her”.
“Prue has now fought – and beaten – cancer twice. She’s the architect behind our record funding investment to rebuild public education in NSW. And now she’s back to keep delivering for the students, teachers, and parents of NSW.
“So on behalf of NSW, welcome back my friend.”
