DELOREAN – SUBIZA

DELOREAN – SUBIZA

The roll-call of established artists who have successfully made the transition from rock band to viable dance act isn’t a long one – New Order, Primal Scream  and Underworld all spring to mind, and closer to this space and time, Luke Steele of Sleepy Jackson/Empire of the Sun fame perhaps. A facility with guitar riffs doesn’t necessarily translate into an ability to fill a dance floor. You can add to this list the members of Delorean : four young men from the Basque region of Spain (which makes them a niche act three times over, I’d argue).  With their latest album Subiza these recovering emo-rockers (and boffins-for-hire Hans Kruger and Chris Coady) have created a sound that is immaculately tooled, gleaming, and precise, but warm and human. Songs like Real Love and Infinite Desert purr, flicker and pulse, the mix of real and sampled voices over beds of processed keyboards recalling the trippy wide-screen melancholia of Susumu Yokota, or the giddy melodic-ism of Animal Collective. It’s the kind of album that will appeal to clubbers and indie kids alike.
