Dear musical theatre fans: the Australian premiere of Dear Evan Hansen is sticking around in Sydney for an extended period after receiving new dates through to the 1st of December!

Originally slated to run from the 19th of October to the 24th of November, the Tony award-winning musical, brought to the stage by Sydney Theatre Company and Michael Cassel Group, has received significant demand ahead of its premiere.

This Australian production marks an important moment in the country’s theatre scene, as this is the first time that Dear Evan Hansen has been licensed Down Under since its inception. The overwhelming demand is a great sign for Australia’s music and theatre productions industry as it continues to steadily recover from the effects of the pandemic, enjoying an ever-increasing market for contemporary musicals.

Stamped as a “gorgeous heartbreaker of a musical” by The New York Times, Dear Evan Hansen is the emotive story of Evan Hansen, a bullied and socially anxious teenager who thrusts himself headfirst into a whirlpool of tragedy, lies, and personal growth. Steered by Melbourne-based director, writer and creative Dean Bryant, the production comes to Australia for the first time after experiencing critical and commercial success on Broadway.

The stars of Dear Evan Hansen

Up and coming star Beau Woodbridge will play the lead role of Evan Hansen and is joined by theatre veterans and icons like Verity Hunt-Ballard, Natalie O’Donnell, and Martin Crewes. Georgia Laga’aia plays love interest Zoe Murphy, while Camel Rodiguez, Jacob Rozario, and Harry Targett make up the rest of the cast.

The creative team behind the scenes features set designer Jeremey Allen, costumer designer Isabel Hudson, lighting designer Matt Scott, sound designer Andrew Poppleton, and video designer David Bergman. The music and lyrics are curated and created by Grammy-award winning songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul – known best for their phenomenal work on La La Land and The Greatest Showman – who wrote the hit songs ‘You Will Be Found’, ‘Only Us’, and ‘Sincerely Me’.

With previews beginning on the 12th of October, don’t miss your chance to see the touching coming-of-age story at the Roslyn Packer Theatre in Sydney ahead of its tours to Melbourne, Canberra, and Adelaide!
