DEAD WEATHER – SEA OF COWARDS

DEAD WEATHER – SEA OF COWARDS

Meg White may be a little reclusive these days but Jack White has no trouble keeping the Stripes flag flying in his many guises. Sea of Cowards is the second Dead Weather album in twelve months; a group that grew from an impromptu session at Jack’s place now has two albums and a solid year of touring under their belt. The band that Jack built features White behind the kit, Kills vocalist Alison Mosshart, bass player “Little Jack” Lawrence and Queens of the Stoneage guitarist Dean Fertita; and album number two sees them delve deeper into their blues via classic 70s Zeppelin inspired rock fetish. Indeed the ghost of (the still living) Jimmy Page looms large over this album, Hustle and Cuss and Jawbreaker in particular verge a little too close to the Led Zep home, leaving you more inclined to go and put out IV than Elephant. Elsewhere on tracks like Gasoline feature large chunks of Jon Lord-esque keyboards that reinforces that 70’s stadium rock is alive and well in  2010. White and Mosshart share the vocals, and their interplay is one of the more interesting elements here, their voices often seeming interchangeable. Sea of Cowards adds to the Jack White canon without advancing it.
