An investigation is currently underway following a shooting involving the police and an armed man in Darlinghurst. Emergency services responded to a welfare concern on Chisholm Street at Darlinghurst at approximately 4:40pm on Sunday, September 17, 2023.

Upon their arrival, officers from Surry Hills Police Area Command were allegedly confronted by a 32-year-old man wielding a knife. Despite the presence of NSW Ambulance paramedics, the man continued to approach the officers while still holding the weapon.

In response, a constable discharged their firearm. The man received immediate medical attention at the scene and was subsequently transported to St Vincent’s Hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

A crime scene was set up, and multiple residential streets were blocked. The Leichhardt Police Area Command’s critical incident team will conduct a comprehensive investigation into all aspects of the incident, including the use of the police firearm.

An independent review will be carried out as part of the investigation procedure.
