DANNY BOYLE’S FRANKENSTEIN

The man who brought you the unforgettable if ill-fated heroes of Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours, also turned his director’s eye to the lumbering figure of Frankenstein in this National Theatre Live presentation. Sherlock’s utterly compelling Benedict Cumberbatch alternates performances as the Creature and the creator alongside Jonny Lee Miller (who, coincidentally, will be joining the whodunit TV series in 2012) – a whimsy that playwright Nathan Dear says came all from Boyle’s brain. Coupled with a soundtrack by electronic wunderkinds Underworld, when originally staged in March 2011 reviewers called the “most viscerally exciting and visually stunning show in town.” It may not be in its full fleshy glory, but a cinema near you may be as close as you can get to the spectacle.
