Waverley Council plans to enforce a lean, green low-fat diet at a future café at Waverley Park, striking heart-clogging, waistline expanding items off the menu.

Councillor Kerryn Sloan said Waverley Council were doing what they could to encourage local residents to eat healthily. The Council wants to fight unhealthy food culture by including food restrictions for development applications on Council land

“We want to show by example,” Cr Sloan said.

“We’re just trying to act with the must responsibility that’s available to us… It’s not a specialist diet we’re talking about.”

Vicky and Kevin Frost who help coach and run a female rugby team at Waverly Park said it was important for the health of the teams to have good food served at sports grounds.

“They used to have those crappy, soggy sausage rolls . . . it’s definitely something we don’t appreciate.”

Mrs Frost said she has noticed a trend away from the usual sports ground sausage roll towards fresh food made on-site.

“It is good places are going away from hot dogs and chips… they are starting to serve salads and fresh food,” Mrs Frost said.

Cr Sloan said many of the sports grounds serve rubbish at a premium price and the shift to healthier foods won’t affect the cost.

“There’s not a great deal of difference in price,” she said. “I don’t think people mind paying a bit extra for healthy food.

According to Food Standards Australia and New Zealand eating trans-fats increases the amount of bad cholesterol in your blood and helps contribute to heart disease.

Waverley Council is currently receiving expressions of interest for the development site at Waverley Park.
