The article ‘Sydney’s shady past: still present?’ by Nina Pace in the aMUSE section (Sydney Writers Festival) on 20 May quotes Robin Hammond as saying, when talking about young men adversely affected by war experiences: “Some have lived through the Depression and then they came back from the Great War shockingly affected…”

Ms Hammond, a respected historian did not say this.

The quote is in error as the Depression began more than 10 years after the end of the Great War. The only factual part quotable to Ms Hammond is the fact that “Some have come back from the Great War shockingly affected.”
