CONFESSIONS OF A DRAG QUEEN

CONFESSIONS OF A DRAG QUEEN

When 13-year-old Ricky moves from the Brazilian slums to the land of the long white cloud he is forced to grow up, fast!

“It’s mostly the story of my life,” says writer/director Ricky Beirao. “It’s about discovering my sexuality, the gay world, the drag scene and the consequences that comes out of that.”

Ricky Beirao has been performing drag for the last six years and his alter ego is the unstoppable Rhubarb Rhouge. “Ricky is very shy. Guys won’t go out with him because he does drag. Rhubarb is the opposite. He’s loud and proud.”

He’ll also be performing alongside two dancers he calls the support trannies. “They’re two girls dressing up as boys dressing up as girls,” he explains laughing.

The show has sold out in both Melbourne’s Midsumma Festival and New Zealand. It seems its success is due to Beirao’s honesty. “[Audiences] are definitely going to have some fun, maybe shed a few tears and learn what it’s really like in the drag world. It’s not always glitz and glamour, there’s some sadness in it.”
